Lip reduction: The lip reduction procedure is performed under local anesthesia on out-patients or may be performed under general anesthesia if they are undergoing multiple procedures. The surgeon creates a horizontal incision on the inside of the lips, then removes excess fat and tissue from the lips before closing the incision with stitches. Lip Augmentation options: Lip augmentation can be achieved by injecting or surgically implanting materials into the lips. INJECTIONS: Collagen injections: Collagen injections are used to temporarily augment the lips. The results generally last between one and three months. In some people collagen injections may cause allergic reaction so sensitivity test is recommended before the lip augmentation procedure. Fat injections: Fat is injected into the lips through fine needle. The fat is taken from patients own body often from the abdomen or thighs, and is purified before it is injected into the lips. Main advantage of Fat injection is that there is no possibility of an allergic reaction and results usually lasts longer than collagen injections. SURGICAL PROCEDURES AlloDerm: Alloderm is the most popular material for lip augmentation Synthetic Implants: Synthetic Implants do not shrink and are never absorbed into the body. Synthetic implants are foreign substances and may become infected or be rejected by the body. If this occurs, the implants can be removed. Fat grafting: This procedure has permanent results in approximately half of the people who try it. Although it is possible that the body will reabsorb it, many people choose fat grafting because they are most comfortable with using the fat from their own body. Local flap grafts: Local flaps bring material from inside the mouth outside to enhance the lips. Results are temporary.
After Lip reduction surgery best results are seen at about two to three months. Lip Augmentation Recovery: Injections: Recovery takes about 1-2 days. Bruising and swelling may last as long as a week. Grafts and flaps: Recovery takes about 1-2 weeks. During this time, you may experience some drooling, some temporary stiffness in your lips. Post-operative care after lip surgery:
- For the first 48 hours apply ice packs to your lips to reduce swelling and bruising
- To avoid swelling or bleeding, do not bend over, strain, exercise or do any other activities that could increase pressure to your lips.
- Keep the lips clean to avoid infection
- Sleep in a semi-upright position for the first week and do not sleep on your stomach
- Talking and chewing should be limited during the first 48 hours
