- How does hair transplant work?
Androgenetic (Pattern) Alopecia is a genetically determined disorder characterized by the gradual conversion of terminal hairs into vellus hair. Men present with gradual recession of frontal hairline early in the process, also gradual thinning in the temporal areas (frontal area), and producing reshaping of anterior part of hairline.
Females present with diffuse hair loss over crown producing gradual thinning of hair. There will be widening of the mid-partition, frontal hair line is often preserved. The end result can be an area of total baldness. This area varies from person to person and is usually most marked at vertex (crown area).
Hair transplantation is a procedure where in the hairs are taken from the donor area which is the occipital area, which is free from the influence of hormones and also the density of hairs are more compared to the frontal area. Thus the hair transplanted is lifetime and permanent.
In a gap of 6-8 months complete hair growth occurs, which can be cut, trimmed, shaved or colored. Harvested area of the occipital region will heal completely without any evidence of surgery.
- Will my hair transplantation look completely natural?
Yes, after hair transplantation you will get completely natural looking hair. You can wash, cut, trim or even color your hair just the way you do for your natural hair.
One can notice new hair growth in a month, though in first month some of the transplanted hair may fall but again the hairs will grow back, to observe significant results one should wait for minimum of 6 months. To see complete results one should wait for 12 months. After the desired growth one can go for haircut for particular style.
Natural looking transplanted hair depends on certain factors
- Hairline should be appropriate for the age of the person. It should not be a straight line, as the natural hairline is bit irregular.
- Thickness of the hairs in different areas also is a important factor to get natural look.
- Angle of the follicles should be like that of the normal hair.
- Mild recession of the frontal hairline can be maintained to recreate the natural look.
- How long does a hair transplant procedure take?
Hair transplantation is a day care procedure; it will take total of 6-8 hours. First step of the hair transplantation is to trim the hairs short, and then scalp will be cleaned with povidine iodine. Xylocaine test dose will be given; later local anesthesia is given to the donor area that is occipital area. Then grafts will be harvested from the donor area, hairline is marked in the desired pattern of the client, after local anesthesia multiple slits are created in the recipient area. The grafts which are harvested are implanted into the slits, dressing will be done.
The grafts will be taken up by the recipient site by 15 days.
- Does the hair transplantation procedure hurt?
Hair transplantation is done under local anesthesia. While injecting local anesthesia client may feel little pain, later the procedure is not painful. Client may notice pulling sensation when grafts are harvested but not pain.
There may be mild pain after the surgery when effect of anesthesia wanes off, which can be managed with pain killers (NSAIDS). The recovery process is usually very simple and uneventful in most of the clients. If one follows certain post operative instructions given by the doctor it will further decrease the discomfort. Most of the people can return back to their normal routine activities within 1-2 days.
Benefits of the hair transplantation procedure outweigh the minor pain and mild discomfort. With the advent of new techniques hair transplantation is growing as a very effective least invasive surgery for the people with alopecia.
- How many grafts /hairs will I need?
The number of grafts depends on the extent of the hair loss and also expectation of the client.
For frontal and bitemporal hairline recession usually 2000-2500 grafts are required to restore the hairline, for the biparietal area coverage on an average 3500-4000 grafts are required.
If you have lost your hair severely then more follicular unit grafts are required for cosmetically significant results. The more the extent of the hair loss, more will be the requirement of the donor area.
For any area on an average 100 grafts are required to cover the area of 1 sqcm. Exact number of grafts which are required can be estimated after in person evaluation of the donor and recipient area by the doctor.
- What is the recovery/healing time?
Medically recovery means the wounds are healed and the client can resume their normal day to day activity. After hair transplantation recovery is uneventful in most of the cases. Wound will start healing by 2-3 days of the surgery; the dressing will be removed on the 3rd day. Post surgery client will have minimal pain and discomfort which can be managed by pain killers.
The scab which is formed in the donor and recipient area usually falls off by 7- 10 days. After 10 days donor area will heal completely, remaining hairs at the donor area will grow and cover the harvested site. Even the recipient area will show healing by 10 days.
- When will my newly transplanted hair start to grow?
After hair transplantation procedure, transplanted hair starts to grow in the first month in most of the clients. Few hairs may fall off during first month as hairs will be in different phases of hair growth. But the hairs will grow back. Hair growth increases by 3 months, but the significant growth can be observed at the end of 6 months.
For complete growth to occur one should wait for the period of 1 year. Once the desired length is achieved hairs can be cut, trimmed as the normal hairs. Initially the growing hairs will be fine later they will increase in thickness.
- Are results of hair transplantation permanent?
Androgenetic alopecia is a hormonal and genetically determined disorder where the hair loss is progressive. In male pattern hair loss, hair is lost progressively from frontal and temporal region. In hair transplantation, grafts are harvested from the occipital area which is free from influence of the hormones.
This hair is resistant to the hair loss which occurs due to hormonal action, they retain their resistance to hair loss even in the new location. So transplanted hairs will lasts for decades which are almost permanent.
Other hairs apart from the transplanted hairs may fall, as Androgenetic alopecia is a progressive condition. Other preventive measures need to be used to prevent original hairs from being lost including combination of PRP, medications.
- What does a Hair transplant cost?
Hair transplantation cost varies person to person depending upon the requirement of hair grafts. We strongly recommend every individual to undergo scalp analysis with video derma scope by our expert doctors at MAAC, based on the analysis the number of hair required can be decided and accordingly the cost calculation can be done.
